“Action is the foundational key to all success.”
-Pablo Picasso
And action it was throughout the 4 most memorable days of one’s life. And success is what it reaped. With the arrival of 28th of January, came to IIT Kharagpur the largest fest it had ever seen, Kshitij 2010. The 12000 participants, including the 5000 outstation participants, would stand testament to this stupendous feat. Participants from all across the country poured in to witness this remarkable phenomenon.

Kshitij 2010 Arena
Sitting together one fine afternoon, reminiscing, we realised how much we have grown. From just an idea some 7-8 years back, we are now one of Asia’s Largest Techno-Management Fest. With a wide variety of things to participate in, it was the Events that took the lime light once again. From computer geeks to management gurus, there was something for everyone. Open Soft, Open Hardware, B-Plan, The Senate, Zero Hour, Eureka, and many more made sure that none of the fields, of either engineering or management, were left unexplored. A total of Rs. 50 lacs were given away as Prize Money to winners of our events so that they could give wings to their marvellous ideas.
Leading from the front in the Guest Lectures series this Kshitij was Shekhar Kapur, the famous Padma Shri award winning director. His lecture on Creativity inspired all. Alongside him was George Kourounis, Host of the popular television series ‘Angry Planet’. Kharagpur had never before seen such a free spirited man before. Nobel Laureate Sir Anthony James Leggett enlightened all with his research on superfluidity. Robin Chase, one of Time Magazine’s top 100 most influential personalities, Chris Phillips, The Invisible Man, Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and MD of Brahmos Aerospace and the Vice President of IBM ISL India, Dr. P. Gopalakrishnan stimulated the audience like none had ever before in IIT Kharagpur.
Our dedication towards the events and the wonderful efforts of our participants is the only reason why world renowned organisations certify our prestigious events. Overnite ACM/ICPC , certified by ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) saw a huge amount of participation, with participants from the great institutions of America and Europe. IMechE certified events like NightShift, Laws Of Motion, Nirmaan and SOE, definitely propagate its objective of making world a better place through engineering. ASHRAE’s Kryotech still remains one of our flagship events attracting a lot of participation. The ASME Student Design Competition was truly a sight to behold, with ASME officials looking on as pioneer Robotics innovation was showcased. A new addition was the IDPs (Industrial Design Problems) that were proposed by GE. The event was reciprocated to with great fervour from the participants.
One of the most novel things Team Kshitij did in this edition was the social initiative that it took along with GE, Gram Pragati. Aimed at the betterment of students studying in rural colleges, this event alone brought to us such great satisfaction that we cannot express in words.
Technical Exhibitions and Workshops laid the foundation for the learning aspect of the fest this year. Interactive workshops ranging from Autonomous Robotics to Hot Air Ballooning, and enlightening exhibitions like Solar Car and 3D Animation were organized to whet the appetite of eager students.
Megashows have always been an integral part of Kshitij. They provide us all with great evenings that can be cherished for years to come. The amazing Sand Animation Show stole the heart of each individual present there. While the performance of Nigel Mead, the great magician, was rooted so much for an encore that we organised one more show for our beloved audience. The 3D holography show, with the humorous inclusion of Rivaldo, rocked the evening.
Team Kshitij feels proud to organise such a symposium, that everyone enjoys and also gets something to learn from. But we cannot possibly take all the credit for it. We would like to thank all our enthusiastic participants who come from every corner of the country. Your participation keeps our spirits alive. We extend our gratitude to IIT Kharagpur and to our sponsors without whom, Kshitij 2010 would have been impossible.
If by any chance you feel that Kshitij has reached its peak, we’re happy to tell you that you are highly mistaken. Cause this time, in January 2011, you will witness something you’ve never witnessed before, feel something that you’ve never felt before. It’s going to be grander than all its previous editions. Be there at IIT Kharagpur to witness the spectacular fest, Kshitij 2011.

Hello Once Again Friends!!
As the weather gets colder day by day, we launch new events to get you warmed up! The events Woodstock, FOREX, Analyst and Cryptex have already started and their first round have officially begun. Also on their way this week are two more events, Overnite Prelims and ASME East Engineers Conclave. But the most happening thing this month is the Kolkata Edition Of Speak Out For Engineering, an IMechE certified event.
I hope you liked the experience that my dear friend Amit has shared with you. Today another of my dear friends, Deepak would like to share something with you.
Hello everyone! I am Deepak Singh. I am the General Secretary of TSG, IIT Kharagpur. I am very pleased to inform you that the trial round of Woodstock and FOREX received a great response and was very successful. Now we have started the first round of both the events. From here starts the real competition, the battle of mettle and guts.
Apart from Woodstock and FOREX, two more events have been launched this month. These are Analyst and Cryptex. Both these events are being newly introduced in Kshitij this year. Let’s talk about Analyst. This event deals with the various financial strategies that are used in today’s market. Such kind of strategies were used to make profit even during the times of recession. The event started on 30th October.
Now coming to Cryptex, the event is based on Cryptography. Cryptography is the practice and study of hiding information. Modern cryptography intersects the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Applications of cryptography include ATM cards, computer passwords, and electronic commerce. In the event we will give you a set of hidden data and you will have to decode them. The tutorial for this event has been uploaded on our website also. The first round started 1st November. To learn more about these two events, log onto our website www.ktj.in.
Looking forward into the month of November, there are two more events coming your way, Overnite prelims and ASME East Engineers Conclave. Overnite is the ACM/ICPC 2010 Multi-Provincial Programming Contest hosted by IIT Kharagpur . For details regarding the event, visit http://www.ktj.in/#overnite.

Workshop
Durga pooja… a festive time for some…for some its going back to home…but for Kshitij its an opportunity to spread its horizon all across the nation.
One month ago
When I heard I have to go to Delhi during pooja holiday, I felt a pang of pain for not spending time with my family but rather work. Two major events were going to be organized in Delhi, workshop on robotics & cryptology and prelims of a new event Speak Out for Engineering, a new addition to the august series of events of Kshitij, certified by IMechE. Hearing this new élan filled me along with lots of responsibility. We started contacting & harassing our friends for arranging colleges. After two weeks of constant bugging, we finalized the dates & venue for the workshop & SOE.
A week before leaving
An auditorium full with interested students is a dream for everyone but for us it is our driving force. But by just thinking was not going to help so we all sat down together to plan how to make it interactive & useful for the audience because we surely didn’t want them to say after the workshop “Thank god! This is over.” But say “you know I don’t mind going all the way to Kharagpur because Kshitij is worth it!”
Night before leaving
Excitement is in the air being very infectious because for most of us it was for the first time we were going to organize something of such great importance. But with trepidation, a feeling of anticipation was also lingering. After exchanging good wishes, we all left for our respective destinations to help some to make their dreams come true.
3 days before the workshop
Unless the students know about the majolica of kshitij very few were going to turn up for the workshop & the prelims and loose an opportunity to learn to make a perfect line follower robot or explore the depths of cryptology or participation in internationally recognized debating event. So, we went around all the colleges in the city and near by, interacting with the students, putting up posters & notices in their campus. Phew! I must say those were the days when my body was screaming in protest!
SOE
A bright warm day is always a good sign! Thinking this I left my place early in the morning. Trust me all along the way I was praying to god for the success of the event like I haven’t even done for my semester examination. But I guess its rightly said “But once in a while people push on to something better. Something found just beyond the pain of going it alone and just beyond the bravery and courage it takes to let someone in. Something beyond the quite persistence of a dream.”
The event drew a huge participation from colleges all across the city. With around 30 teams participating, it was a perfect time for all debating lovers. Engineering students got a chance to speak for their career protecting it against the latest trend of MBA or civil services after BTech.
So, first major event was a success! Now praying for the workshop!!
Workshop
After the success of SOE prelims, the expectations were running high for the workshop. That in itself is quiet scary!
Another bright day! A feeling of déjà vu! The same anxiety…The same pressure!!
We reached the college a couple of hours before time to set up the place for presentation.
I remember really well, one member just thought aloud what happens if this is not a success as the other! What if….
And then the entire team with full confidence and enthusiasm told him Kshitij is always growing exponentially and we will do better than the other workshops or events in past!
Trust me those words came true when the auditorium started filling up before time.
Looking at the excited faces the same thought was going through all our minds
Most of our lives are a series of images, they pass us by like towns on a highway. But sometimes a moment stuns us as it happens and we know that this instant is more than a fleeting image. We know that this moment, every part of it, will live on forever.
The robotics workshop kicked off starting from the basics of a differential drive going all the way to the working of a micro processors and finally teaching how to make a perfectly running autonomous line follower. This was followed by a workshop on cryptology, an art that has captured many lives by its mysteries.
There are no words to explain the feeling that you get when you see all your hard work paying off.
We were all going through the same emotions when students with satisfied faces left the venue and I’m pretty sure that we’ll be meeting some of them very soon in IIT KHARAGPUR during Kshitij from 28th to 31st of January giving technical output to the society!
Kshitij speaks…

Hello Everyone!
Let me first introduce myself. My name is Kshitij. I am the annual techno management fest of IIT Kharagpur. I am only five years old. But don’t think that I am a small in any aspect because that would be terribly erroneous. I say this based on the fact that I am the largest of my kind in the whole of Asia. Although I get only four days in a year to mingle with people and make new friends, I made over 30,000 friends from all over India and some even from abroad. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of new friends I made this year I gave away a total of Rs. 45 lac to my friends who put their best foot forward. And I must tell you, they performed really well. So much so that they even impressed some of my most knowledgeable friends like Philip Emeagwali, the father of supercomputers, Kurt Wuthrich, Noble Laureate in chemistry, Hull University’s Prof. Chandra Lalwani, Chandrayaan Pioneer S K Shivkumar, Prof. Chandra Wickramasinghe, the man behind Panspermia, Emmy Award winner Jeremy Bristow and NASA’s Christopher McKay. Ah, and who can forget the one who delivered one of the most enthralling and enchanting lectures I have ever heard, Prahlad Kakkar, the Ad Guru!
Well since my friends showed me so many innovative ways of solving a problem, I too felt the need to share some knowledge with them. So apart from the captivating guest lectures I organised a number of workshops and exhibitions which helped in developing as well as enhancing their interests in a particular field. The Aeroshow attracted hordes of interested people, while Mind Reading Machines and Solar Robotics kept stunned audiences rooted to the spot. Workshops on topics as diverse as Film Making and Forensic Sciences, along with ones on Hands-On Robotics, Space Sciences and Financial Risk Management dotted the schedule as students got enlightened the fun way!
For some who were still thought that there was no ‘fun’ in Kshitij and that it was all technical stuff, we organised the megashows! The Megashows, as always, were a major attraction at Kshitij. Functioning to overflowing crowds at this edition, the shows left onlookers gasping for more. Lasers and lights dominated the shows, with beautiful artists jazzing them up much further, making evenings at Kshitij events to cherish.
Well that’s a lot of information about me, now tell me something about yourself. Log into my website www.ktj.in and register yourself. Any thoughts you have, any suggestions, any complaints or anything you feel just feel free and post it on the forum at www.ktj.in. It will be appreciated and replied to immediately.
Well friends this year I hope to meet my old friends again and make some new friends as well. I am coming to IIT Kharagpur this year from the 28th to the 31st of January ’10. And rest assured this time I am going to be much bigger and better than ever before. Keep looking in this space for more updates from me or one of my 43 really special friends who never leave my side. Thanks to them, I am where I am.
